The massive attack on Sony Pictures computers this week resulted in the theft and distribution of a number of upcoming movies, including expected Academy Award contenders such as Still Alice and Mr. Turner.
Many analysts suspect North Korea is behind the crime as a means of retribution over the impending release of the Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy The Interview, which satirizes the rogue state’s dictator Kim Jong-un.
It is a tough financial hit for Sony, but will still result in more eyeballs seeing those films than their box office flop Pompeii.
