UPDATE 1:20 p.m.: Vancouver director Jamie Travis’ L.A.-filmed debut comedy For a Good Time Call . . . was bought today at Sundance by U.S. distributor Focus Features, who paid a reported $2 million for worldwide rights.

EARLIER: The Hollywood Reporterhas pegged the comedy For a Good Time, Call . . . as one of 10 films with buzz at the Sundance Film Festival.

The Los Angeles-filmed movie has a couple of Vancouver connections, starting with director Jamie Travis, a University of B.C. film grad who made his reputation with a string of moody, black-comic short films (The Saddest Boy in  The World, The Armoire) that scored a hit at festivals in and outside Canada, and eventually sent him down to L.A. for a deal to make this first feature.

Among the cast is Vancouver’s Seth Rogen, who needs no introduction. The new movie stars Rogen’s wife Lauren Miller (who co-wrote the script with Katie Anne Naylon) and Ari Graynor in a story about two women who start a phone sex line.

Also among the eclectic cast are Justin Long, Nia Vardalos and Mimi Rogers. The story sounds like another dip in the raunchy Bridesmaids end of the comedy pool, which could be a good thing.
